Statement from the member:
Working on game preservation activities fills me with dreams and romance.
Among game programmers in the 1980s, the feeling that they were doing something of cultural value was likely non-existent. In the end, like flowers of their age—no, not even that. Like withering grass that does not bear any flower, all these works appeared and faded like ideas born and discarded. More than culture, that was the symphony of all the fascination and hopes for an uncharted territory.
With this context in mind, to take up such an activity as the transmission of this heritage as a way of preserving it seems like an idealistic enterprise, much like Don Quixote’s fight against windmills.
However, if it comes to supporting poor works, I am hesitant to sing the praises of my own past directly. I am very happy to be able to support this effort from the side. Even if mine is just a small corner of the game industry, I am glad to provide my own contribution to GPS.
Biography:
Learning how to code on his own while working in the business of automobile supplies, Hidaka developed his debut game, Haunted Cave, which was released in 1984. From then, he became an independent programmer.
He then presented his second work, Magic Garden, to Enix, and started actively collaborating with the company as a programmer. He contributed to the porting of materials to the PC-88 series, as well as working as the main programmer for Gandhara. He was also in charge of the technical side of, for instance, graphic data compression.
As for his programming work, he published Game programming in machine language with ASCII, which became a best-seller.
From this point on, he wrote pieces for magazines, as well as publishing books on game programming and machine language. His works became the main reference point for any aspiring game programmer. In fact, he is considered the head of that first generation of game programmers.
